Vital victory for Wivenhoe and the rest of this weekend's Thurlow Nunn League news
THERE were crucial results at both the top and bottom of the Thurlow Nunn League.
WIVENHOE TOWN pulled off the result of the day, in the battle to avoid relegation into division one.
The Dragons ran out 2-1 winners at home to Kirkley & Pakefield, thanks to goals in either half from Luke Goldie-McSorley and Callum Rogers.
Wivenhoe have now been joined in the drop zone by neighbours FC CLACTON.
The Seasiders were leapfrogged by Ely City, after an incredible 4-3 defeat against the Cambridgeshire side at the Rush Green Bowl.
Clacton led 2-0, thanks to excellent goals in quick succession from Aaron Condon and Tom Holdstock.
Ely then pulled one back just before the break and nosed in front with two more – including an own goal - before the hour-mark.
Condon then won and converted a late penalty to rescue what looked a share of the spoils.
But Ely goalkeeper Lee Pacey pumped forward a free-kick two minutes into stoppage time and was amazed to see it float straight into the Clacton net.
At the top, BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT dug deep to see off Diss, 3-1.
Diss led at the break but Regent stormed back thanks to two goals from Terry Rymer – a volley from outside the area and a great solo effort – and Kevin Coyle’s 25-yarder.
STANWAY ROVERS suffered another home defeat, conceding a late winner and losing 1-0 at the hands of Haverhill Rovers.
BRANTHAM ATHLETIC scored via a last-gasp own goal but it proved only a consolation in their 3-1 defeat at Gorleston.
In division one, HALSTEAD TOWN roared back to winning ways thanks to a 3-0 success at Debenham LC.
Jordan Palmer scored twice and Lee Hurkett once.
