A late penalty condemned Colchester United to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Sheffield United tonight.

Substitute Chris Porter's 87th-minute spot-kick inflicted a second successive defeat on the U's.

Both sides struggled to find openings in the first half but Sheffield United looking the more dangerous.

U's keeper Sam Walker easily saved John Brayford’s far-post header, while Ben Davies’ glancing header flashed wide from Jamie Murphy’s delivery.

Colchester made a double substitution at half-time, sending on Craig Eastmond and Alie Sesay for Brian Wilson and Clinton Morrison.

But it was Sheffield United who looked the more dangerous of the two sides, with the lively Jose Baxter’s superb curling effort came back off the foot of the post.

U’s keeper Walker then made a wonderful reflex save to deny Davies from point-blank range from Brayford’s cross, as the Blades looked the most likely to break the deadlock.

But after Freddie Sears had fouled Davies in the area, Porter stepped up to score from the spot and leave the U's beaten.

What on earth will be the excuse for this latest embarrassing and infuriatingly inept display from Col U?
Blades were fairly poor but were gifted most of the possession from Col U whose game plan and formation were just all wrong - yet again!
Col U displayed very little passion, being second to the ball throughout the second half - and even less skill, virtually incapable of passing the ball with any accuracy.
Playing the ball around at the back for what sometimes seemed an eternity, only to eventually hoof the ball aimlessly forward, is definately not what fans want to see. The jeers from the stands make that plain enough!
Even in the extra time at the end of the game, the players showed no urgency to get the ball forward. I agree with stevedawson - they never threatened to score. Getting an goal attempt on target seemed beyond the players tonight.
And, presumably, the sponsor's MOTM award to Freddie Sears was meant to be a "mickey-take" too?!
A very depressing Tuesday-evening at WHCS.

The first half was an embarassment I have never seen such poor passing by col u in 20 years, they would of passed to their own better with their eyes closed, should have a 50% pass rate! The second half was a little better but no shots on target again! An honest review from Joe on radio but he hints that home form is the crowds fault! With performances like that I am surprised anyone turns up, Joe never gave a performance like some of his players did tonight ever!!

What an embarrassment, these gormless sponsors who pick the man of the match. Freddie Sears was the U's worst player on the pitch. MOTM should have been Eddie the Eagle.
It is no disgrace to lose to a team which has done as well in the FA Cup as the Blades, but it is a disgrace to keep a clean sheet for 87 minutes and then throw the match away with a stupid penalty.
