NEW FC Clacton manager Phil Yearling wants his side to treat their remaining Thurlow Nunn League fixtures like “cup finals”.

The Seasiders boss admitted having mixed feelings after his first game in the hot-seat - Saturday’s thrilling 3-3 draw at Felixstowe and Walton.

Clacton led 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 and grabbed their final goal - what looked destined to be a winner - in the 90th minute.

However, Felixstowe attacked again and salvaged a point with their third equaliser, two minutes into stoppage time.

Despite being disappointed to let two points slip, Yearling said there were lots of positives - and has challenged his young squad to keep reproducing more of the same.

“I had mixed feelings because although I would have taken a point beforehand, it was disappointing not to win after leading three times and being in front in the 90th minute.

“That said, we didn’t lose against a very good side. Defensively, we were very solid and there were lots of positives.

“The boys gave everything and their response in my first game was excellent.

“They showed a very good attitude from start to finish and that’s a very good sign. Now we’ve got to recreate that type of performance over and over again and treat the rest of our matches as cup finals.

“I really believe in this group of players and don’t tend to look too much at our opposition.

“To me, it’s more about how we play than the team we’re up against and if we apply ourselves properly, we shouldn’t have too many problems.

“I’m fortunate in that the legacy I’ve inherited is a good young side. But we can talk all we like about our talented players - now we’ve got to prove it and we should be doing better than we are.”

Yearling was quick to praise the travelling supporters, who turned out in force and cheered their side on in the pouring rain.

“We must have had 60 fans there,” said the Seasiders boss.

“That’s absolutely fantastic and tremendous support, for a club at our level.”
