Purdy is 'in best shape ever' ahead of title fight

LEE “Lights Out” Purdy insists he is heading into his big European title fight against Leonard Bundu in his best ever shape.

The Colchester welterweight boxer is preparing to take on the experienced Italian at London’s ExCeL on Saturday night.

It is Purdy’s first contest since his seventh-round defeat at the hands of Devon Alexander in a non-title fight in the United States in May.

Purdy was given only four weeks’ notice for the fight in Atlantic City and the British champion failed to make the weight.

But this time around, the 26-year-old former British champion feels he is in tip-top condition for this weekend’s showdown.

Purdy said: “I’m feeling good and I’m ready to go.

“It’s all about it ticking over and maintaining the fitness.

“I’ve left no stone unturned with my preparation and I’ve had much longer to prepare, this time around.

“In terms of both my physical and mental state, I’m in the best shape I’ve been in.”

Purdy has set his sights on claiming the belt from Bundu, who is preparing for the fifth defence of his European welterweight title.

The Lazio boxer is currently rated world number four by the International Boxing Federation and wants a world title shot if he beats Purdy.

“I think our styles are quite similar and that should make for a good spectacle,” said the former Thomas Lord Audley School pupil.

“He likes to come forward and trade and so do I.

“I’m sure it’ll be a great fight for the fans to watch.

“He’s a lot older than me and he’s been around for a long while, so I’ll be looking to see how much he has left in the tank.

“He’s ranked WBC number four and that’s where I was when I fought for the world title and that could be next.”

Purdy’s contest with Bundu is one of 16 fights taking place on the bill at the ExCel, on Saturday night, with the likes of Kevin Mitchell, Anthony Ogogo and Jamie McDonnell also on the card.
