Heybridge Swifts lose out to Waltham Forest

First published in Sport

Leon Fisher orchestrated Heybridge Swifts’ downfall at Scraley Road.

The hosts lost out 2-0 to visiting basement side Waltham Forest in their Ryman League division one north encounter.

Michael Cheek had an early penalty appeal waved away by the referee before Fisher opened the scoring.

And he did so in spectacular fashion as he fired in a shot from 30 yards past Heybridge keeper Danny Sambridge on 26 minutes.

Heybridge attempted to get back into the game and Ben Newson was denied a scoring opportunity by a timely tackle from a defender.

Swifts were unlucky again when the visiting keeper spilled a Russell Malton cross and the ball fell just out of the reach of Michael Cheek.

Newson then tried to lob the keeper but his effort went over.

But Fisher then doubled Waltham Forest’s lead on 45 minutes.

After the break, Heybridge looked to get back in the game and Newson had two efforts saved.

But Sambridge was called on to make a great stop to deny Fisher a hat-trick when he fired at the keeper from eight yards.

On 87 minutes, Newson went close but his effort was just over.

Heybridge were unable to make an impression on the score-line and had to settle for the defeat.
