Colchester Golf Club’s ladies’ winter competition was decided on countback, following a close finish.

This year’s event, organised by the club’s ladies’ captain Shelley Persent, took the form of an Am-Am played in teams of four.

A total of 56 ladies took part, with the team of Liz Harrison, Janet Austin, Bridget Whitworth and Liz Lennox snatching first place on countback with 66 points.

The team of Jacqui Prince, Helene Guest, Sally-Ann Angel and Maureen Crosbie had to settle for runners-up spot, after also recording 66 points.

In third place on 64 points were Marilyn Free, Jill Baker, Heather Dennis and Annie Johnston.

Fourth spot also had to be decided after a countback, with a stronger back nine helping the team of Jane Lochore, Pip Macaulay, Cynthia Lampon and Pamela Adams beat Joan Cotterill, Sara Turner, Bee Pertwee and Mandy Rix.

The winter competition was played on a bright sunny day, with a gentle but chilly wind.

The course, looking as good as it has done all summer and now dressed in its autumn colours, was playing long with holding greens.

It was the first taste of winter golf for the ladies and the day ended with lunch and the prizegiving.

All proceeds of the day went to the ladies’ captain’s chosen charity, the Alzheimer’s Society.
