U's fall to Wolves home defeat
The U’s, who were missing 11 players due to injury, illness and suspension, performed well in the opening stages with Alex Gilbey and Matt Taylor both going close.
David Wright’s volley was well saved by Wolves keeper Carl Ikeme but Wolves improved as the first half wore on.
They took the lead through Leigh Griffiths’ 20th-minute penalty, after Taylor was adjudged to have fouled Matt Doherty in the area.
Danny Batth’s header dropped just wide before half-time but Wolves doubled their lead less than three minutes after the restart through Griffiths, who beat Magnus Okuonghae to Henry’s cut-back to score from close range.
And things went from bad to worse for Colchester seven minutes later when Kevin Doyle headed in from close range, after being picked out by Henry in the area.
Colchester had a chance to claim a consolation goal when Marcus Bean was brought down in the area by Wolves keeper Carl Ikeme, with four minutes to go.
But Ikeme atoned for conceding the spot-kick when he saved Sears’ penalty, to complete a disappointing afternoon for Colchester.
