Gladiators have national glory in their sights
8:00am Saturday 5th October 2013 in Sport
COLCHESTER Gladiators will go all out to achieve national glory today.
The all-conquering Mill Road-based American Football side have already enjoyed a superb season, staying unbeaten in being crowned National Division Southern champions.
Now they have the chance to cap a memorable campaign by beating Gateshead Senators in the National Division Final in Leeds today.
Gladiators are expected to be promoted to the top tier of American Football in the UK, following their success this season.
But Gladiators head coach Matt Roberts is keen to see his side finish with a flourish.
He said: “This game is the culmination of what’s been a very challenging but rewarding season.
“While sometimes the results have seemed to suggest the wins have come easily, what people perhaps don’t always see is the hard work in the off-season in the gym, the commitment at training from both the coaching staff and players and everything else which has helped put us in such a fantastic position.
“In a league with several excellent teams, to get to the final and maintain our undefeated record is credit to everyone.
“Personally, for me the top goal was to win the southern final and ensure promotion so now I feel we can really relax into the final, enjoy the preparation and go out there on Saturday. We can put on a real show for the fans and hopefully win some new ones in the process.
“We just can’t wait to kick off and hope to return home as champions!”
Gladiators chairman Neil O’Hare added: “The Senators will give us a real test.
“You don’t win a regional final unless you’re a solid, well coached team and we’ll have to be at our best to emerge victorious.
“We’re confident we have the players to hurt them though.”
Gladiators will have the majority of their squad to choose from, with only Tom Clarke, Lewis Henson, Phill Pearson and Paul Bovingdon unavailable. They will make a late decision on the fitness of Dave Crane and his knee injury.
The National Division Final, at the John Charles Stadium in Leeds, starts at 12.15pm and will be streamed online at gridirontv.co.uk
