A DEPLETED Heybridge Swifts fell to a 5-0 defeat against visiting Thurrock.
Heybridge headed into the Ryman League division one north game on Tuesday night with Peter Haxell replacing unwell keeper Nick Eyre between the sticks.
With other key players such as Robbie King, Lee Kersey and Kevin Dobinson also missing, the last thing Heybridge needed was an injury to a striker early in the match.
However, Luke Callander had to be replaced early on as he felt a twinge in his hamstring once again.
Swifts fell behind to a Lewis Spence scrambled goal on 11 minutes and David Knight hit home a cross, the first of his hat-trick, five minutes later.
Heybridge almost gave themselves hope on 20 minutes.
Tom Holdstock put Newson through and his shot was parried away.
The ball fell to Holdstock but his strike was denied by the swinging leg of Lewis Clark.
Michael Cheek saw a penalty claim waved away before Thurrock struck again, as Darren Blewitt chipped Haxell from just inside the area for a 3-0 lead at the break.
Heybridge had fashioned two excellent chances to put themselves on the score sheet but hadn't done so and it was Thurrock who struck again on 57 minutes.
A 20-yard shot by David Knight beat Haxell to his right.
The closest Heybridge came to a goal was Michael Cheek’s header which hit the post on 63 minutes.
Knight completed his hat-trick on 70 minutes.
A quick move by the visitors saw Haxell bring Charlie Stimson down just inside the penalty area and Knight made no mistake with his spot-kick.
