U's take away Bradford's perfect home record
It was an afternoon of firsts for Colchester United as they drew 2-2 with Bradford City at Valley Parade in League One.
No-one had taken a point off Bradford at their home ground before the U’s visit, the hosts hadn’t conceded a goal and Colchester had failed to hit the target more than once in a game, but all of those statistics bit the dust.
Bradford’s bright start was rewarded with a goal by Nahki Wells on 14 minutes, but the U’s worked their way back into the game and Jeffrey Monakana, who was making his debut after joining on a month’s loan from Preston, drilled an equaliser home on 28 minutes.
And Colchester’s second came four minutes later when Monakana turned provider and released Jabo Ibehre one-on-one and he slotted the ball past the advancing Bradford keeper Jon McLaughlin.
The double salvo clearly rocked Bradford, but they came back strongly after the break with Wells flicking a header past Sam Walker to level matters once more.
With their confidence restored, Bradford had the better of the play after that, but they couldn’t find another way through.
Colchester did create problems of their own at the other end, though, with Gavin Massey hitting the post with a strike from long distance.
However, neither could grab a crucial third and both had to be content with a draw.
The only down point for Colchester was that Daniel Pappoe was shown a straight red card just four minutes after he had come on.
His late challenge in the 89th minute left former U's winger Mark Yeates on the turf and referee Tony Harrington had no hesitation in brandishing the card that saw Colchester finish the game with ten men.
