COLCHESTER Golf Club seniors team captain Tim Rogers praised his team after they were crowned Essex Seniors Team champions.
They claimed the trophy after winning 8-3 against Upminster Golf Club at Bentley.
Rogers said: “This victory has been a massive effort from a group of guys, not just the people who played in the final but the whole group who have played in this and the earlier rounds. We had our fair share of frights on the way to the final but we have got here and won.”
Brendan Booth was the first man out against John Nash, who was given nine shots. Booth eventually coasted in six up with five to play.
Dave Blackmore’s game against Jim Rook was a more even match, with both playing off 12 handicap. But Blackmore added to Colchester’s tally, winning 2&1.
The matches continued in a similar vein, with Bill Eke turning a three-down situation against Roger Edwards into a 2&1 win. John Dornan was never headed by Peter Crump and won 4&3.
Chris Doyle won 3&2 and after Tom Rothery defeated Peter Steptoe six up with five to play, it was clear that Colchester were going to be crowned champions.
Colchester stamped their authority on the match in the back nine holes. Roger Robertson won 4&3 in a tough match against five-handicapper Dave Cook.
Colchester’s Lorrie Austin lost out to Martin Ramsey 4&2 along with Mike Smith, who met a five handicapper on form losing 2&1.
Dick Bokenham lost his encounter with John McInerney.
The last match to finish was Vic Pomphrett, who completed Colchester’s emphatic victory with a 2&1 win over Clive Pemberton. It was the first time that Colchester had won the trophy since 2005.
