U's still hopeful over Gilbey contract
Alex Gilbey has turned down a new contract offer from Colchester United.
But the U’s are still keen for the promising young midfield dynamo to put pen to paper on a new deal.
Colchester want Gilbey to follow in the footsteps of fellow starlets Drey Wright and Tosin Olufemi, who have recently committed their future to the club.
However, the 18-year-old midfielder, who has less than a year to run on his current deal, is yet to agree to sign the extension offered to him.
U’s boss Joe Dunne said: “We’ve offered Alex a deal and his representatives have turned it down.
“It’s not a concern - they have to do what’s best for them and we as a club have to do what’s best for us.
“We’ve offered what we think is right, in terms of our structure and we think it’s fair.
“But we also appreciate that in the modern climate, you have to do what’s best for yourself.
“It’s certainly not something that has affected Alex or his football, nor our relationship.
“We’ll wait and see what happens but Alex is someone who I’ve known for a long time now and I gave him his debut.”
Gilbey’s rise to prominence in Colchester’s first-team squad has prompted them to take steps to keep him at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.
The former Gilberd School pupil, who signed his first professional deal when he penned a two-and-a-half year contract with the U’s in February 2012, has been involved in seven of their opening eight matches this season.
Gilbey’s appearance in the Colchester starting line-up for their 2-0 defeat at Coventry City last Sunday was his first league start of the season and his third for the U’s, in total.
The talented teenager also enjoyed a successful loan spell at Newport County, at the end of the last campaign.
Gilbey helped Justin Edinburgh’s side win promotion to League Two in the Conference Premier play-off final, beating Wrexham 2-0 at Wembley.
