Colchester golfers lose out in semi-finals
9:00am Friday 30th August 2013 in Sport
Colchester Golf Club have missed out on a place in this year’s Thornton Cup Challenge Final.
They were beaten 10-5 by Chelmsford at Wanstead Golf Club in the semi-finals of Essex’s team knockout competition.
Colchester’s defeat looks heavy but eight of the 15 matches were so close that they went down to the last hole, before being decided.
Colchester were four matches to one down after the morning’s singles, so it was always going to be an uphill struggle.
Jake Farson lost 3&2 to Alex Bradley after a tough rear-guard action, as Farson was dormie six down on the 13th tee.
Steve Wynne halved his match against Jack Smith but Ben David succumbed to Chelmsford’s plus three handicapper Jack Hilcuta 3&1.
Dan Eke went down 4&3 to Simon Gibbins but after a fine performance, while Tom Miller just failed to win against James Allen and went one down on the last.
A gauge of Miller’s performance was that Allen was five under par when he won.
Alan Sharrocks had a tough opponent in Keith Davies but came out on top with a 2&1 victory.
However, George Whitbread spoilt his hard-earned record in the competition and lost one down to Elliot Oxlade.
Bill Eke, playing the Essex Seniors champion Peter Cumberworth, came up trumps with a two up victory on the last.
John Logan battled well to halve his match against Andrew Petts and Jon Gilbert played superbly to beat Sam Crampton 4&3, to complete the individual scores.
Losing to Chelmsford is certainly no shame, as the competition is played off scratch.
The aggregate playing handicap of the Chelmsford team was 12, including a five handicapper, against Colchester’s total handicap of 34. Colchester compete again for county honours when their seniors team take on Upminster in the Essex Seniors Team Championship Final at Bentley Golf Club, on September 10.
