Sears: point showed our progress and maturity
GOAL hero Freddie Sears believes Colchester United showed both progress and maturity by gaining a point at Sheffield United.
The fancied Blades were held to a 1-1 draw in Saturday’s League One contest.
Sears’ slick finish gave Colchester the lead – only for United to equalise after an uncharacteristic error from goalkeeper Sam Walker.
However, the U’s scorer was in buoyant mood afterwards and said: “Last year we came here and were out of the game early on, so this shows how far we’ve come.
“We thought we’d be on the ropes a bit in the second half, at a place like Bramall Lane.
“But they didn’t cause us many problems and it was a really good point.
“The gaffer’s been very positive during pre-season and there’s a great spirit among the boys, in training and on a daily basis.
“There’s a lot of belief and that can take you a long way.
“You only have to look at last season and a team like Yeovil (who gained promotion to the Championship).
“They showed that anything’s possible.
“They had the lowest budget and no-one predicted them to go up, but they had a good team spirit and were mentally strong.
“They showed what can be achieved and it would be great if we could do something similar.”
