U's youngsters out to impress against Arsenal XI
Colchester United manager Joe Dunne is looking forward to seeing the club’s best young players do battle with their Arsenal counterparts tonight.
A U’s side made up predominantly of under-21 players will take on a Gunners XI featuring Academy players in a friendly at the Weston Homes Community Stadium (kick-off 7pm).
Colchester boss Dunne plans to use the game to give game-time to members of his first-team squad who need match action.
The likes of Josh Thompson, Daniel Pappoe, Alex Gilbey and Drey Wright are all set to play a part in the match.
However, the U’s are hoping to also give fledgling youngsters such as Tosin Olufemi, Mason Spence and Nnamdi Nwachuku the chance to impress.
Dunne said: “We’ll play maybe three or four first-team squad members against Arsenal.
“We’ll look at that over the next couple of days, to see how we are in terms of bumps and bruises.
“But I want to make sure that our development squad get some game time.
“I’m not going to fill it with pros, because that’s not what the game is about.
“I’d like people to come and watch and see where we’re trying to get to.
“It’s a chance to test ourselves against some of the best youngsters in the country, who are learning their trade at a top Premier League club.
“I’m sure that there’ll be plenty of quality in their squad.”
