Braintree Town had to settle for a 1-1 draw on the opening day of the Skrill Premier at Hereford United.
Alan Devonshire’s side took an early lead thanks to an own goal, when Sam Smith headed into his own net on seven minutes.
Dean Wells had almost given Braintree the lead a minute earlier when home keeper Rhys Evans denied him with a fingertip-save.
Kenny Davies was the next Iron player to be denied by Evans with another stretching save on 27 minutes.
It was the visitors who had the upper hand in the first half but they couldn’t increase their advantage.
A minute after the break, Luke Daley tried his luck but Evans was again able to deflect the ball away.
Evans was then called on to deny Sean Marks on 52 minutes.
Marks went close again on 72 minutes but his header went over the bar But Hereford equalised when Michael Rankine’s cross was headed home by Danny Walker seven minutes later.
Kenny Davis attempted to retake the lead but Evans managed to deflect his shot away to safety.
However, Braintree had to settle for a draw and a share of the spoils.
