Massey nets winner to give U's victory over Vale
Gavin Massey scored the winner to help Colchester United make it two wins out of two in League One with a 1-0 win over Port Vale.
Colchester were the better team in the opening half hour and produced some attractive, attacking football.
Freddie Sears' lofted effort came back off the crossbar and Vale keeper Chris Neal was forced to make saves to deny both Sears and Massey, as Colchester pressed for an opener.
Jabo Ibehre's first-time shot flew just wide after Sanchez Watt's pass into the area had caused problems for the Vale defence.
But the visitors finished the first half strongly, without really testing U's keeper Sam Walker.
Sears' low shot flashed just wide for Colchester early in the second half and although Chris Lines' effort went close for the visitors, the U's looked the more likely to score.
Ibehre fired straight at Neal after Massey had got in behind the Vale defence and Sears had narrowly missed out on converting the rebound.
But Colchester made the breakthrough with 16 minutes to go through Massey, who converted from close range after Neal had saved Ibehre's low shot with his legs after a swift Colchester attack.
