Josh determined to stay in U's starting line-up
8:55am Wednesday 20th March 2013 in Sport By Jonathan Waldron
Back in the fold - Josh Thompson has started Colchester United's last two games in League One.
Josh Thompson says his recent spell on the sidelines has fuelled his desire to be an automatic choice in Colchester United’s starting line-up.
But the tall centre-back has welcomed the fierce competition for places currently evident within the U’s squad.
Thompson had become a regular for Colchester since joining them on a permanent deal from League One side Portsmouth, in January.
But the 22-year-old was replaced in Joe Dunne’s side by Tom Eastman following their 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Tranmere Rovers, last month.
He spent four games on the bench but Eastman’s ankle injury has led to Thompson starting the U’s last two games, helping them secure four valuable points on the road.
Thompson said: “It’s great to be starting games again but being out of the side is part of football.
“When you’re out of the team it makes you even more determined and it’s about what you can do when you’re back in the team.
“It’s up to me to prove to the manager I’m worthy of that starting place."

Glad that Josh is beginning to settle down and enjoy his football. I was worried about him replacing Tom Eastman in the starting line up, bearing in mind the Tranmere debacle, but as a young player, he has learned a lot from the experience and is beginning to adapt to the role. I wish him continued improvement and hope he sustains his efforts in the forthcoming encounters against MK Dons and Bournemouth. We desperately need to achieve results in both games to stave off the threat of Oldham and Scunthorpe. A home defeat in either game will open up the way for Scunthorpe. The win away at Bury was massive for us and we need to build on that. Let us hope we perform on Saturday - yet another massive game for us. Come on you U's!
Totally agree Ozzie.
