COLCHESTER’S Olympic, Paralympic and sports stars were honoured at a special ceremony.
The Sport Colchester Sports Personality Awards for 2012, sponsored by the Daily Gazette, Colchester Institute and The University of Essex, were held at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.
There were special awards to the borough’s Team GB and Paralympic GB heroes that competed at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Olympic sailing silver medalist Saskia Clark and race walker Dominc King were joined by Paralympic swimming bronze medalist Natalie Jones and sailing’s Hannah Stodel to receive their awards on Monday night.
Paralympic F42 javelin thrower Scott Moorhouse was unable to attend due to training committments.
But the borough’s Olympic volunteers, the Games Makers, were also honoured for their contribution to making the London Games so successful.
And it was a double celebation for 470 Olympic sailor Clark, who claimed a silver medal in Weymouth along with helm Hannah Mills, as she picked up the The Premier Sports Personality of the Year award for outstanding achievement during the calendar year by a professional sports person.
The Male Sports Personality Award went to racewalker King, who was the first Briton to compete in the 50km walk since the Sydney Games in 2000.
The Female Sports Personality award went to Paralympic GB swimming star Natalie Jones, who took the bronze medal in the 200 metre individual medley (SM6).
See Thursday's Gazette for reaction and more pictures from the event.
