Dunne delighted with U's win

All smiles - Colchester won for the first time since November thanks to a 2-0 win over Walsall. All smiles - Colchester won for the first time since November thanks to a 2-0 win over Walsall.

Joe Dunne said he was delighted with his players after they ended their nine-game losing run with a 2-0 win over Walsall this afternoon.

Dunne felt the U's deserved their win at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, given to them thanks to late goals from Jabo Ibehre and Freddie Sears.

Dunne said: “I thought it was a well deserved win, especially on our second half performance.

“We had to be very competitive, in terms of the game plan.

“It wasn’t a great game, in terms of style or football.

“But when you are where we are you have to dig in and I thought it was a really good performance.

“When we spoke at half-time we said that we were in the game and we felt we could go on and win in and that’s what we did.

“We kind of played like an away team in the first half.

“That was based on how things were going but David (Wright) sat in front of our back four and did exceptionally well – I thought that he had a great debut."

Without doubt I thought Walsall were the better team in the way of possesion and passing. Yet it proved in the last 15 minutes, that a change of a player and a more attacking formation will work. Majority of the U's players, all had good games apart from two or three who to me never really got involved in the game as they should. I thought when starting the game with Clifford and Massey both lightweights that we could struggle a bit.I dont like picking on certain players but I thought Marcus Bean had an awful game. I watched him very closely today on every move he made, and yes he was up and down the pitch yet he failed to mark players or move into any kind of return pass when going forwards. John Jo for me is a far more competive style of footballer and I dont agree with J.Ds decision in not having him in the squad. Then Bouncy Freddie comes on and lifts the team and by chasing a loose ball makes the first goal. Porters pace down the wing made the second. It worked wonders so please Joe dont change it for the next game. Overall chuffed to bits and cant wait till next week. Its on my doorstep so lets be hoping for a good following of U's supporters.

What a result.

Two goals and a clean sheet.

A lack of tackling aside, I think we deserved our win. Yes Walsall dominated the first half, but we kept them at bay very well.

2 great substitutions and our confidence went sky high.

Well done joe dunne and co

I think without a doubt when George Porter, and Freddie Sears came on and the formation changed to 442 we played our best football, and the football the fans want to see. Well done to the lads. Agree with the above comment in Marcus Bean, he too me looked appalling.

I have to say though, I thought seeing George Porter at half time doing a warm up that he wouldn't be good. But he proved me wrong, he's touches, and movement was superb, and the pace he provided took their full back out of the game.

I think another player that made a difference in the side was David Wright, he gave us a holding/defensive midfielder... That we have needed for a long time. With him there you could tell the players were more confident in loving forward.

Fantastic game, about time we saw some good football, especially in the 2nd half when we changed to 442. First half showed that we can defend, and showed less of an attacking threat. I feel that the introduction of David Wright in the defensive midfield was one of the key factors as he controlled the defence, and allowed the other midfielders to attack. The new GK had a good debut game, and gave our first clean sheet in a while, hopefully Cousins learnt that communication with the defenders is key to success. In terms of attacking threat, Jabo was immense throughout the game, but I feel the turning point was young Porter coming on and Freddie Sears. They both ran circles around the defence, especially showing their pace and top notch passing. That 2nd goal showed how much it meant to everyone in Col Utd, players ran to Sears, Dunne jumping up with Kinsella and fans stunned with smiles. A brilliant game, I'm now tempted to go to Pompy.

The Hut was different class to everyone else in terms of work rate - a guy that isnt blessed with skill but really puts himself about. With someone along side him (Fred) it is something potentially promising. Walsall only had a couple of chances despite their possesion, and some good play. I agree with the earlier posts - Bean wasn't good, he gave the ball away an awful lot.

3 points at home and a clean sheet against a side in excellent form. Well done all. The signing of Wright could be a shrewd one. It was obvious we needed experience in there. Now we need to get a few wins in a row. Confidence will be high now.

Lol, you know what she really didn't look like she was doing anything, stood around most of the time.

It's a win and that's what we need. What I saw in the first half was basically two teams of similar quality and simply put one with confidence and one without. Walsall looked better in the first half for this reason and this reason alone. We got our break with the mis hit shot across the face of goal and the players dug in. David Wright I thought did excellently and could almost be overlooked such was the nature of his display. He did the simple things well and with a keeper with prescence and with David in front of the defence there wasnt that expectation of when something was going to go wrong which allowed us some space to attack. Similarly Porter and Sears changed the game and this is what JD has been alluding to re depth. When was the last time we've had game changers and match winners on the bench? I can't remember it. We've been carrying passengers too long and been forced to stick with players who have had it too easy. Seems this isnt the case now and the fact that Eastman wasn't missed, (and he's been a highlight of a poor season for me), makes me feel much better too. And, I have to give credit where it's due, I thought John White did an excellent job and Magnus was the Magnus of 2+ years ago. I don't think I've ever been so happy at the end of a game and there's no reason this can't be carried forward now. There's the makings of a decent side there.Well done to JD and the players and for the vast majority of the fans who have stuck with it and shown positivity in the face of adversity.

What more does Freddie Sears need
to do to regain his place in the starting
line-up?.

Happy birthday to Jabo Ibehre who
will be thirty tomorrow(January 28).

The U's now need twenty six more points- from a possible fifty four points - to be sure of staying up.
For no team with fifty two points has been relegated from League One in
the last eight seasons.
But can the U's obtain those vital
twenty six points (six wins and eight
draws?)from their remaining eighteen matches, which include daunting trips to Sheffield United and Coventry City
and tough home games against
Swindon,Tranmere,Bou
rnemouth and
MK Dons?.
Here is a cut-out-and-keep guide to the points totals obtained by the thirty two teams relegated from League One over the last eight seasons, which explain why the U's survival target must be fifty two points (we are on 26,so we need 26 more):
2011-2012:
43 Wycombe
42 Chesterfield
42 Exeter
38 Rochdale
2010-2011:
47 Dagenham
45 Bristol Rovers
42 Plymouth
41 Swindon
2009-2010:
50 Gillingham
45 Wycombe
43 Southend
25 Stockport
2008-2009:
49 Northampton
46 Crewe
39 Cheltenham
34 Hereford
2007-2008:
48 Bournemouth
46 Gillingham
38 Port Vale
33 Luton
2006-2007:
47 Chesterfield
47 Bradford City
38 Rotherham
37 Brentford
2005-2006:
50 Hartlepool
50 MK Dons
48 Swindon
47 Walsall
2004-2005:
51 Torquay
43 Wrexham
39 Peterborough
26 Stockport

A great result, but one swallow doesn't make a summer. However, it was good to get back on the winning trail again after a bleak couple of months or so. The way we finished the game certainly gives JD a different kind of Headache. Is Freddie Sears fast becoming our super sub or should he be in the starting line-up? Should Georgie Porter also be in from the start at the expense of Massey or Drey Wright? Where does this leave Wordsworth, hopefully firmly on the bench? Just a few questions to be answered before the next match at Pompey.

Interesting post BlueandWhiteBaz
and,as usual,well written.
The print version of today's
Gazette(Monday January 28)
suggests that Wordsworth might
be leaving this week and that Ipswich
might pay £100,000 for him,although
there are no quotes to support this.
If he does leave,I hope that the U's
can negotiate a good sell-on
arrangement.

Agreed RB Lexden, I certainly hope he does leave for pastures new this week. I don't think we'll get much for him as I believe he is a bit of a risk for any club to take on. He just hasn't progressed as he should have done by now, with his lazy attitude too much to the fore!

Have to agree with a few on here that we did indeed use all our nine lives in the first half, Walsall were unlucky to go in at half time at 0-0. Second half they seemed to be playing for the draw, did not have the same urgency about them which allowed us to start playing, plus as soon as Sears and Porter came on gave more support to Jabo (who was excellent all game) as the 4-4-2 system offers.
Would like to see young Gilbey in the centre of the park as the play maker, he really did not deserve to be dropped after his display against Scunthorpe.

However I have to disagree over the contribution made by new signing David Wright. How many tackles did he put in? From what I saw none. His kit was pristine! How many times did he put his foot on the ball and get us moving forward? Did not see these magic touches that some are mentioning, did see some pointing aka Bobby Bowry stylee though. He mainly watched the game pass him by. From this performance (I appreciate it is only one game) the only thing he is going to bring to the game is his zimmer, he certainly isn’t a Mr. Kevin Watson. Now this is the sort of player we should be signing. Believe we have better players at the club already than Mr. Wright and the only reason he is in the team is due to his so called experience and age.

In defence Magnus is still Mr. Blunder who relies on his pace to get him out of trouble. Would like to see him dropped and play Thompson and Eastman together, same goes for Mr Wilson but not sure at present who could cover his position.

Nice to see a keeper, command his area and when called upon help the defence out by offering himself up for the pass.

Excellent to see a home win, certainly makes the weekend happier, but still room for improvement.

Up the Good old White and Blues

You are the sad one, Mr Honest. I have had my differences with RB on other topics, but his contributions on football are always valued.
.
Keep it up RB, we like your interesting facts. And well done for wishing Jabo a happy birthday.
