Thompson convinced goal should have stood
9:20am Monday 7th January 2013 in Sport By Jonathan Waldron
Disappointed - Josh Thompson had a goal disallowed in the U's 1-0 defeat at Doncaster Rovers.
Josh Thompson admitted he was left bewildered after having a goal disallowed in Colchester United’s 1-0 defeat at Doncaster Rovers.
Thompson thought that he had scored his first-ever U’s goal after nodding in Brian Wilson’s free-kick just before half-time, at the Keepmoat Stadium.
However, referee Richard Clark chalked off the effort, after spotting a push by U’s midfielder Anthony Wordsworth on Rovers defender Jamie McCombe in the box.
Colchester went on to lose the game, after David Cotterill struck an excellent winner in the closing stages.
Thompson said: “I thought it was a goal – only the referee knows on that one.
“I asked the referee if it was anything to do with me and he said no, it was behind me."
