U's squander two-goal lead to lose at Gresty Road

Essex County Standard: On target - but Ian Henderson's goal was not enough to prevent the U's from losing at Crewe. On target - but Ian Henderson's goal was not enough to prevent the U's from losing at Crewe.

Colchester United threw away a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 at Crewe Alexandra this afternoon.

Colchester took a third-minute lead through Freddie Sears, who drilled in from Ian Henderson's low pass.

Marcus Bean went close with a brave header, before the U's doubled their lead just before the half hour when Henderson scored a brilliant individual goal, superbly lifting the ball over stranded keeper Alan Martin.

Colchester were in control in the first half and went in at half-time in charge.

But Crewe came out strongly in the second half and Lauri Dalla Valle pulled a goal back for the Railwaymen five minutes after the break when he converted Matthias Pogba's pass, despite the U's claims for offside.

And the home side equalised in the 63rd minute when captain Luke Murphy converted from the spot, after Magnus Okuonghae was adjudged to have handled in the area.

Crewe completed their comeback with 16 minutes to go when Pogba headed in at the far post from Byron Moore's deep cross.

And although Colchester pushed for an equaliser late on it was not to be, as they suffered a third straight defeat.

Back down the table we go. Our defence needs sorting out, drop Wilson and Magnus. Joe you don't need a genius to till you that your half time team talk was shocking. Once again your team has dropped a 2-0 lead.

Must admit,I was rather surprised when I saw Wordsworth in the line up,after his woefull performance on Tuesday night. We would all love to be team managers with our own ideas, but having achieved that two goal lead,I would have then swapped Wordsworth for OToole in the second half,to add some bite in the defence. It was obvious they would attack us in the 2nd half,so bolstering the defence would have been vital important. I do hope your reading this Woody because a few fancy bits of footwork,(when it comes off), does not impress me. You need to get some aggresion in your play, fight and chase after the ball instead of just backing off. Your to cocky for your own good at times. You have talent galore, but still no U's manager seems to be getting the very best out of you. I am not blaming the defeat today on Woody, but we do need 10 terriers out on that field in every game.

Wordsworth is never going to be a top player! all he does is score a free kick every 15 games.......sorry when you have the young players we have he should not be in the team. And what is making rose captain near the end, he is another weak link just like magnus, no skill on the ball for this squad he should have gone. Big Tom captain for me he is solid and still young enough, bring in John-joe to hold that mid-field.

Well I didn't think I'd feel worse than last weekend any time soon, but after losing a lead like that again I do. The defence has been rubbish all season.
Im not going to blame dunne, he's not had enough time and it is wards team still. Can't say I was overly excited by the two loan signings on Friday although I'd have thought getting the new defender on for Magnus might have helped.
My one positive is though at 2.2 jd made a very attacking change. It back fired today but if it had worked we would be singing his praises. This is what I'd rather see yes we may lose a a point but its worth risking for 3.

BBC Essex match commentry highlighted the stark unpredictability of lower league football. Col u seemed to be crusing until the break, then unbelieveably fell to pieces. How do you explain this? Super L commented last week that any team can beat any team at this level, how right he is!!.
Watching 'match of the day' last night, was like 'football' from another planet. Fabulous goals, great come-backs, and what about Fergy's brilliant substitution for Man U, Hernandez coming on and getting a hat-trick?. This is what dreams are made of..What chance have little old Col U got?..'Never mind' I'll still remain one of the 3,000 faithfulls, and hope for a change of fortunes in the future. One thing I will never do is..Name check our players when things go wrong, they do their best under the circumstances..Up the U's..
