Angry Maldon residents have started a petition against plans to change their local pub into a new Tesco Express amid fears it will “destroy” the shops on the High Street.
A planning application was submitted by Tesco to Maldon District Council last week to change The Cups pub on Wantz Road into a new 260-square-metre convenience store.
Their plans include demolishing the existing bakery next to the pub to build a single storey building and renovating the existing pub.
Homeowners are baffled by the plans as a Co-op store stands just metres away across the road.
A free bus to the Tesco supermarket in Fullbridge also operates in that area.
Retired Brian Pawsey, 66, of Mill Road, said: “Co-op serves us really well as it is."
