A ROOM full of colourful lights, mirrors and sounds will help children learn and develop new skills.

A new sensory room and wall have been installed in the children’s section of Chelmsford’s Central Library.

The facilities have been hailed as an “innovation” for Essex Libraries and are believed to be unique.

The project was developed in conjunction with Essex County Council’s Inclusive Communication Essex after feedback was received from parents of children with disabilities.

They said they wanted an area where children could have fun, play together and learn. Research shows sensory and interactive experiences can help a child’s development and learning, improving skills such as concentration, listening and turn taking.

The wall features an LED light panel which reacts to touch and noise, animal sounds, mirrors and an interactive video floor which can be used for learning and games.

Jeremy Lucas, Essex County Council’s cabinet member for customer services, environment and culture, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the new sensory wall and room and have already been inundated with enquiries from children’s groups wishing to book a session.”

The sensory wall and room can be booked in advance by groups and will be used during the library’s baby and toddler activities. It will also be available to the public at allocated times.
