Upset mums are concerned abotu their children missing out on lessons to take part in attendance and punctuality courses.

Following parents' complaints, Maldon Primary School headteacher Tracey Thornton defended the six-week attendance and punctuality programme, which takes children out of afternoon classes for 40 minutes each week.

Mrs Thorton said: "The majority of parents have given us very positive feedback and usually there is an improvement in the children's attendance and punctuality."
