A man has died after being hit by a train near Kelvedon railway station.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Langleys foot crossing, near Kelvedon station, at around 11.35am, but the man was declared dead at the scene.

A British Transport police spokesman said: “The incident, which was also attended by officers from Essex Police, was reported at 11.35am and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

“Paramedics from the East of England Ambulance Service also attended, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers are currently working to establish the identity of the man and inform his next of kin.

“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

A spokesman for train operators Greater Anglia said: "The train involved was the 10.52 Ipswich to Liverpool Street service.

"We are putting a rail replacement bus service in place between Witham and Colchester. There will be some increased journey times."

The incident will cause further difficulties for commuters in Essex after problems on the line this morning.

A broken set of points at Liverpool Street station has led to mass train cancellations as a number of platforms are out of operation.

Engineers from Network Rail began work on the points at 10.30am and hope to finish before 4pm.

A spokesman said: "Trains are getting in and out. Fixing the points will take a few hours but hopefully will be complete before the evening peak time."
