Grants worth thousands up for grabs with the Gazette

GRANTS worth thousands of pounds are up for grabs for worthy causes, courtesy of the Gazette’s parent company, Gannett.

Registered charities, which show a creative approach to helping the community, can apply for grants from the Gannett Foundation.

The grants usually range from £1,000 to £5,000, although larger amounts are sometimes available.

The foundation rewards charities which run projects of lasting benefit, those which benefit people with special needs, and sport environment, conservation and local history projects.

Last year, three Colchester charities were picked out from a huge number of applications for a grant.

Beacon House, in East Hill, which offers healthcare services to homeless people, was given £4,996 to renovate the ageing showers at its shelter.

The Colchester YMCA received a grant for £2,114 to fit out its training kitchen with enough equipment to teach its young residents how to cook and eat healthily.

And the Phoenix Swimming Club, based at Colchester Leisure World and created for people with disabilities, received £1,552 to replace its 15-year-old landing mattresses, used to help members get in and out of the pool.

Grants will not be made to individuals or organisations which are not registered charities, or national or regional groups.

Medical or research organisations, animal charities and school groups are also ineligible, with the exception of special needs schools.

Donations from the foundation cannot be used to pay salaries or put towards general running costs, endowment funds, general appeals, or campaigns run over a year or more.
