MS sufferers are set to embark on a 250-mile ride on a specialised cycle.

Multiple sclerosis affects the central nervous system and can be increasingly debilitating.

However, clients at Josephs Court at the MS-UK centre in the Hythe, Colchester, can use special Thera bikes.

The machine stimulates the muscles and controls their exercise, supporting them when they are tired and also stopping them from overdoing it.

It can be used by people which a range of neurological conditions including cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis.

There are two Thera bikes at the centre, but with 230 clients now using Josephs Court, the bikes are in great demand.

The Ride 250 aims to raise £10,000 to buy a new bike.

Four bikes will be set up at Josephs Court on October 3, and participants in the challenge will take it in turns to notch up the miles.

Mike Kinton, who is the interim manager at the centre and trust and foundations fundraiser for MS-UK, said: “The Thera bike is a specialised piece of equipment which is used by the majority of our clients.

“Due to the increase in demand, they are becoming fully booked and we need more.

“It is critical the clients can use it. The Thera bikes help to strengthen the muscles, which is so important for our clients.

“We have 30 new clients his year and don’t want to turn any away.”
