In our next instalment of Pride in Halstead, we take a look at the independent businesses that are proud to call Halstead their home.

It is a difficult time for shop owners across the country, with increased competition from foreign brands and the internet causing many to close.

However, Halstead can boost a good number of independent shops which serve the town well, from high street boutique stores to factories and engineering works.

For earlier firms, the decision to open in Halstead was easy, with the River Colne providing the power for the mill owned by the Courtaulds and the Portway Stove was created in Halstead by Charles Portway so it seemed fitting to keep the business running from the town.

Manufacturing firms in the town today include Central Piling and Maycast Noakes, both of which have been in the town for years, and haven’t considered moving away.
