Maldon Mud Race was hailed a success today, despite the grey sky.
At about 1pm, all 300 entrants battled their way through water and thick mud from the shoreside and back.
Bill Suggitt, 35, of Maldon, managed to get out ahead of the pack, winning the race.
Shortly after the race, Mr Suggitt, a sales contract manager at Blackwater Leisure Centre, said: "My legs are shaking.
"Winning hasn't really sunk in yet.
"I'm chuffed.
"I wasn't expecting to win, not in a Wally outfit anyway!"
A team of five took part from the Maldon leisure centre.
