A pyramid of shoes took pride of place in High Chelmer shopping centre to make shoppers aware of a lesser known charity.
Soroptimist International is the world's largest women's service organisation and work at a local level to make the world a better place for women.
Members of Chelmsford Soroptimists built the pyramid with hundreds of shoes, donated by members of the public; every shoe served to represent the feet, limbs and lives lost through cluster bombs and landmines.
Representatives from Handicap International joined the Soroptimists and the Mayor and Mayoress came to offer their support.
Shoppers were happy to sign a petition, calling for more education in some of the 80 countries still affected by landmines and cluster bombs.
