Fifteen roads in Maldon and Burnham are set to get LED street lights as part of a new pilot scheme.
Essex County Council is rolling out the trial next year and will be measuring energy savings generated compared to conventional street lighting.
An ECC spokesman said: “To ensure we save as much money and energy as possible, we are switching the lights that use the most energy to LED.
“In some areas such as Burnham there are only a small number of these high energy lights so we are therefore only replacing eight in this area.
“In Maldon there are many more so we can replace 231 of them.”
New LED lights should save £12,590 in Burnham and nearly £375,950 in Maldon over 25 years.
It will cost £4,430 to replace eight lights in Burnham and £128,300 to replace the 231 in Maldon.
