MOTORISTS around Chelmsford are being advised to drive carefully after heavy rainfall overnight and this morning has caused a number of roads to flood.

Areas affected included the north-bound slip road at the Boreham Services off the A12 and at the junction of Willow Grove on the Burnham Road roundabout in South Woodham Ferrers.

Parts of the London-bound A12 between junctions 16 and 17 have also experienced flooding causing traffic delays.

A flood warning has also been issued by the Environment Agency for the River Wid between Ingatestone and Writtle.

Emergency service officials have warned drivers to stay cautious when attempting to drive through flood waters.

An Essex Police spokesperson said: "Drivers should slow down and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

"When driving through flood water choose a low gear and do not attempt it if the water is fast flowing or too deep.

"Driving too fast, even in relatively shallow water can cause water to be ingested into the engine.

"Also test your brakes after leaving the water."
