A housing association has taken action after a digusted family claimed they were living in “third world” conditions with a mould and damp filled flat.

Rachael Kempen was worried for the health of her four-month-old baby Riley and says the rest of her family have also suffered chest infections, amid claims Communities Homes People (CHP) had failed to resolve the problems.

Mrs Kempen and her husband Mike, who are both former Notley High School pupils, have taken to sleeping in the front room of their ground floor two-bedroom Bocking flat because of the state of their bedroom.

Mrs Kempen, 25, of Savill Place, Bocking, said: “I told CHP about the damp and fungus about a month ago and they told me to wash it away.

“But if I keep scrubbing the plasterboard, I will end up going through it."

Denise Kent, CHP director of commerical services, said: “The resident recently reported damp and mould growth to the property.

"The company arranged for surveyor and a member of its trades team to attend the property to diagnose and resolve the problem identified.

"CHP provides all of the services a landlord should and residents have a responsibility under their tenancy agreement to report any defects or repairs required promptly.”
