A landlord is devastated after his newly-refurbished pub went up in flames.

Callum Christie, 46, returned to The Old Anchor pub in Feering early yesterday just as firefighters arrived to fight the blaze.

Shocked Mr Christie, of Kelvedon, said: "My whole life is in there."

Although the pub in Feering Hill was open to customers over the weekend without incident, alarmed neighbours rang the fire service at about 2.45am when they saw flames erupting from the building.

Nine crews from Colchester, Witham, Tiptree and Braintree arrived to discover the fire in the roof.

Fortunately no-one was in the pub or adjoining bed and breakfast accommodation. Mr Christie, who lives there, was out at the time, and his bull mastiff Roxy was at a friend's house elsewhere in the village.

The landlord, who had only just had the fire alarms serviced last week, said: "I've been here 16 or 18 months. I have just spent thousands and thousands of pounds doing it up, on repainting and building it up."

Its a good job nobody was home at the time the fire broke out. Even the B&B was empty and the dog had gone to a friends house in the village.

Was there fish on the menu on Sunday?

Nobody home and even the dog had gone somewhere else....how lucky is that!

It's almost as if someone knew there was going to be a fire.

The real shame is that it was one of the prettiest buildings in the Village. Let's hope it's insured and can be restored to it's finest!

Out at 2.45am in the morning and even had his dog looked after. Mmmm very suspicious. Surely the Police are going to arrest this chap. Stinks of an insurance scam.

Where was he at 2:45? Where was his wife and family or is he single?
He is guilty. You can always tell by the eyes...

Callum is a taxi man, he was probably on an airport drop ... yes it does sound a bit fishy, but from what i know there doesn't seem any reason, the pub is doing well on the restraunt front and people of the younger age are always in the pub fridays and saturdays, it may not be the busiest but it gets more business than the angel! i don't see a reason for an insurance scam.

I would check the cameras at the local Petrol station.

There is more than one way to skin a cat, in fact there is two!

Wasn't there a similar situation at a pub in Clacton a few years ago. The landlord was out and had sent his family to the in-laws and a fire destroyed the pub. Shame that the bailiffs arrived on the Monday morning to evict the landlord in that situation but couldn't because the pub had burnt down.
I am not saying or infering anything about this situation. Could be entirely innocent.
