CHESHAM United assistant boss Peter Lawrence reckons it's between his Generals and Kingstonian for the Premier Division title when the Ryman League kicks off on Saturday.

Lawrence is confident that United's cluster of pre-season signings, with Boston striker Paul Fewings also hoping to sign today, will give the relegated K's a good run for their money. But he believes the London club's bigger squad will give them the edge and that Chesham will have to settle for second.

It's been a summer of comings and goings at The Meadow and Chesham are still hoping to tie up the crcila signing of Fewings, before they kick off the campaign at home to last year's league runners-up and Trophy winners Canvey Island.

Fewings has scored goals wherever he's been in a career with Hereford United and Conference outfit Boston.

Lawrence said: "If we can sign this player we're looking to bring in then the season could be very interesting."

Chesham are also hoping to persuade former Wycombe Wanderers youth team keeper Matt Hodson to sign as cover for Delroy Preddie.

But on the debit side, they have lost top scorer Dudley Campbell to Stevenage Borough, Scott Canham to Nationwide third Division Leyton Orient and star defender Martin Fox to Cambridge City.

Meanwhile Lawrence deflected fans criticism aimed at boss Bob Dowie who has missed United's last five pre-season games because of a business trip-cum holiday.

He said: "Bob trusts me and what I can do. It doesn't matter that he wasn't here for all the pre-season. When he had to go away before and he left me in charge we only lost one of my five matches."

Meanwhile Lawrence is calling for a big crowd to get behind United tomorrow.
