TEENAGERS in charge of organising a series of youth discos have been described as overambitious by a councillor, who voiced concerns over rising council spending.

Members of Chesham Youth Council are to receive a subsidy of up to £2,100 so they can stage ten discos in the coming year.

Chesham Town Council is to provide the cash after councillors gave their support to the discos following the success of a recent event staged at the Elgiva theatre, St Mary's Walk, Chesham.

But at a meeting of the town council's planning and general purposes committee, Cllr Sue Jordan (Lib Dem) said that in the face of spending cuts the youth council would have to rethink what it could realistically achieve.

She explained: "We are trying to cut our cloth and they are being overambitious with our money.

"They are very excited and very exciting young people but I think, perhaps, they need a little reeling in.

Chesham Town Council has so far received a contribution of about £50 from the youth council for each disco held.

"The subsidy would therefore work out as just over £200 for each event.

Cllr Judy Ottaway (Lib Dem) said she was glad young people in Chesham were being so keen about organising the events. She said to call them overambitious sent out the wrong message.

A spokesman for Chesham Youth Council was unavailable for comment.
