CAMPAIGNERS are urging Buckinghamshire County Council to follow Kent County Council's lead and ban mobile phone masts on schools.

MOSIB (Masts Off Schools in Bucks) welcomed the decision made by Kent County Council on January 21 to ban mobile phone masts from its property the first council to do so.

MOSIB, an organisation formed by concerned parents and supported by local celebrities like Pauline Quirke and Fern Britton, now wants its own council to follow suit.

A MOSIB spokesman said: "Bucks parents must be asking themselves why our council continues to allow greedy and unprincipled schools to put profit before the health and safety of their pupils, staff and neighbours."

The Stewart Report, a Government report investigating the safety of mobile phones, concluded that more urgent research was needed to establish whether masts trigger cancer and other illnesses. It also said that children would be far more at risk.

The council has already allowed phone masts at its schools, including Holmer Green Upper School, Parish Piece, which shares a site with the primary school.

Spokesman Jenny Sleight said the report said there was no proof that mobile phone masts were hazardous to health.

She added: "We are not taking any specific action regarding mobile phone masts but are following Government guidelines."
