DEMONS will be chased out of the town by the Chinese New Year celebrations next week.

Chinese New Year's Eve and day fall on next Tuesday and Wednesday, January 23 and 24, and the famous lion dance will be performed outside Chinese restaurants in the area to bring good luck for the new year.

The Year of the Snake actually begins on January 28, when celebrations will be held in High Wycombe town centre.

Festivities start at midday with a guest speaker, followed by a lion dance and fireworks.

"Noise is important to send demons away from Wycombe town," explained Joseph Poon, chairman of the Bucks Chinese Association.

"Then the lion dance will be performed to bring good luck to the town."

Firecrackers are no longer available in this country so they use loud fireworks.

There will be fireworks, a t'ai chi demonstration and lucky packets will be handed out to children in the crowd.

Joseph added: "The Chinese children love New Year because everyone gives them lucky packets with money in."

Many councillors, residents and members of the BCA will celebrate this main event in the Chinese calendar.
