HOSPITAL bosses claim new measures to deal with the winter crisis are already paying off.

A new medical assessment unit, which opened last week at Wycombe Hospital, treated 16 patients on Tuesday morning. The new unit, which is designed to help ease the pressure on the Accident and Emergency Department, enables patients who need tests and investigations to get fast-track treatment.

Martin Leaver, spokesman for the South Bucks NHS Trust, said: "Patients who would not be top priority if they went through to A & E can be treated more quickly but also help reduce pressure."

There have been no closures of the Accident and Emergency Department this week.
