RAIDERS have stolen irreplaceable items from a church.
A “unique’’, hand-carved oak lectern, a Victorian prayer table and a book of readings were plundered from St Mary’s Church, in Layer Marney.
The items hold great emotional and historical significance for the church, but have little sell-on value.
The lectern was made and donated in memory of Basil Bowyer, St Mary’s churchwarden for 40 years, who died in 1981.
Church warden Graham Howlett said: “The congregation were shocked and I was disgusted when I saw the items were gone.
“This is despicable. What do you say to appeal to the sort of people who would do this? It is very upsetting.”
Nicholas Charrington, church patron and treasurer and owner of Layer Marney Tower, said: “It is particularly sad to have lost the lectern, as it was a memorial to Basil.
“The lectern was carved by Tom Mabbitt, of H & K Mabbitt, now part of Bakers of Danbury.
“It is a real shame an object like this, with such strong and distinct ties to the parish, has gone.
“We hope to commission a replacement, but this will cost a great deal of money.”
Mr Charrington said Layer Marney Parochial Church Council gave more than £2,000 to charities and aid projects, which would be almost impossible to repeat, as money will have to be spent on replacements.
The church plans to stay open, despite the thefts.
Mr Charrington said: “It remains the intention of the church council to keep the church open during the day so visitors may enjoy the buildings, monuments and history as well as find a quiet place for reflection .”
The lectern has an eagle on top and ball on the bottom, while the table is Victorian and was used to lay poppy wreaths on.
The book of Bible readings, known as a lectionary, had been used during services for 20 years.
Parish priest, the Rev Martin Clarke, said: “I am disgusted. The lectern is a beautiful piece of carving belonging to the community.”
Police are investigating. PC Rich Morris said: “For thieves to steal from a church is bad enough.
“But when they steal items dedicated to former church members and the community it is even worse.”
The items were taken between Thursday at 8am and Friday at 4pm.
Anyone with information can PC Morris, at Colchester police, on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
