TRAVELLERS have again pitched up on land close to Colchester United’s stadium.

Caravans started to arrive at the site on Monday. By yesterday there were eight caravans.

The site is at the junction of Axial Way and the recently opened extension to the Northern Approach Road.

It is owned by Colchester Council.

A spokesman said: “We received complaints of an unauthorised encampment in a compound on land off the Northern Approach Road.

“A ‘direction to leave’ was being served on site on Tuesday, which expired at 1pm yesterday.

“If the unauthorised encampment fails to leave the site, the Essex Countywide Traveller Unit will commence court proceedings.”

The travellers could be summonsed to court next week if they are still at the site. Travellers have pitched up at the stadium and close to it a number of times.

Most recently travellers visited in May with six caravans, but left before court action was taken.
