A MENU of punishments is being put together for victims of crime to choose from.

The idea is to allow those who have been wronged to decide how those responsible should put it right.

The community remedies, for lower level crime and antisocial behaviour, are also expected to speed up the justice process.

A survey has been set up by Essex Police and Crime Commissioner Nick Alston where people can comment and rate what options they want to see on the menu.

Mr Alston said: “Victims are, and should always be, at the heart of everything that I and Essex Police do.

"The community remedy aims to make community justice transparent to victims and give them a say in how perpetrators’ are dealt with.”

Heather Robbie, divisional manager for Victim Support Essex, added: "This really is a unique opportunity for those victims – affected by low level crime and anti-social behaviour – to have a voice that really will make a difference.

"I would urge people to get involved with the consultation and visit the survey to have their say.”

Options include mediation, a verbal or written apology, acceptable behaviour contracts, victim awareness courses.

Also reparation to the community such as voluntary work, paying damages or educational work.
