Work not started on town square

WORK has not yet started on a town square despite plans to complete the project by the end of this year.

The proposals for a public open space next to the Colchester Town Station were put forward in October 2011 and it was initially hoped it would be opened this February.

But the square has faced several delays after negotiations with landowner Greater Anglia took longer than expected and a contractor went bust. A revised opening date in April, to tie in with the official opening of the new magistrates’ court, also had to be put back.

Members of Colchester Council’s finance and audit scrutiny panel were told by an officer on Tuesday the square was still due to be completed by the end of 2012.

Colchester project hit by delays. Not exactly a surprise is it given the recent track record in the town...

It would have been good if the Gazette could have dug a bit deeper and asked why and when. It clearly will not be completed by end 2012 and it is something that will be good for the town, presumably.

Don't hold your breath waiting for this project to start let alone finish. They have yet to start the project to replace the bridge in Bakers Lane which was scheduled to start last August and reported in this paper. Perhaps the Gazette could report on why this has been delayed ?

The Gazette staff do not know the meaning of investigative journalism!
