THE mother of a student who was killed by a car as she walked along the pavement is launching a petition calling for a change in the law.
Cassie McCord was walking along Head Street, Colchester, when a car driven by pensioner Colin Horsfall went off the road and hit her.
Cassie, who was 16, suffered serious head injuries and was taken to Colchester General Hospital before being transfered to Queen’s Hospital in Romford where she died.
After the incident, it emerged Mr Horsfall, 87, from Rowhedge, had been involved in an accident three days before and police had advised him not to drive again.
However, they had no powers to suspend his licence.
Now Cassie’s mother, Jackie, is calling for the law to be changed to allow police to temporarily withhold a motorist’s licence if they consider them unfit to drive.
The DVLA will then decide whether to return or revoke it.
