An artist’s impression of a proposed new Co-op food store in Coggeshall has been released.

East of England Co-op wants to build a bigger store on the vacant Fleetshield garage and workshop site in East Street.

It plans to lease the site of its existing store at Doubleday Corner.

David Cook-Abbott, the Co-op’s general manager for property, said: “Our existing store is too small to meet the needs of our customers.

“At recent consultation events in the village, there was overwhelming support for the new store.

“It will not be a large supermarket, but a modern local convenience store in keeping with the village environment.”

Brian Mooney, of Church Street, Coggeshall, said he was keen to see the proposed site put to use, describing it as an “abandoned eyesore”.

Only one objection letter has been received so far.

Martin and Anne Wiles, of Feering Road, Coggeshall, have written a letter outlining five objections, including concerns over flooding and parking.

They also fear the car park could attract noisy youths outside trading hours.
