PROACTIVE traders in Brightlingsea are hoping to face down economists predicting gloomy business in 2011.

Companies in the coastal town have clubbed together to launch a new guide for residents and visitors.

The leaflet, published by Brightlingsea Business Association, features a map of the town and lists all the shops and places to eat in the centre and at the waterside.

Association tourism manager Robert Shotton said: “It has always been our aim to encourage as many visitors as possible to the town and encourage local people to use and support the various shops and businesses.

“We realise 2011 is likely to be a difficult year and are urging people, where possible, to shop locally and support the town’s shopkeepers and traders.

“The leaflets will enable visitors to see the variety of shops and facilities available in Brightlingsea, thus encouraging them to make a visit and take advantage of the amenities on offer.”

It is not the business association’s first plan designed to buck the downward economic trend.

Previous schemes included advertising empty shops on its website, holding continental markets and history days. The association has also contacted coach operators to add Brightlingsea to their itinerary, in a bid to bring more people into the town.

Des Rowson, association chairman, said: “In this climate you cannot sit back and hope customers will walk through the door. You have to work hard.

“None of us have ever experienced these economic conditions before.

“This leaflet means if someone comes into the town, it’s even easier for them to see what’s on offer.”

The leaflet will be available from Monday, at local shops, Brightlingsea harbour office, and at tourist information centres throughout the region.
