A CAFE and antiques shop is set to open in two disused buildings.

The redundant newsagent and an old luggage area at Colchester Bus Station has been taken over by the Hidden Kiosk Project, launched by the Creative Coop and Colchester Council.

Organisers invited people to enter their ideas to fill the two disused kiosks in Queen Street with temporary shops, music venues, cafes or places to exhibit art.

A team of judges has chosen ideas by Emily Spears and Emma Fennell to open a Fifties-style cafe and an antiques shop as the first project. They are set to open on Saturday.

The shop will be called Bijoux Bisous.

Inspired by the Lyons tea shops of the Forties and Fifties, it is hoped the pop-up cafe will provide a service to Christmas shoppers waiting for buses.

It will sell homemade cakes and biscuits, coffee and tea. There will also be jewellery, ceramics, textiles, prints, paintings and knitwear for sale.

Bijoux Bisous is expected to be open for about two weeks before another project takes over.

Other ideas suggested for the space include a “human juke box”, a music and arts venue and a place to sell magazines.
