A YOUNG would-be grandmaster from Colchester will fly out next month to take part in the World Chess Championships.

Gorak Rajesh, 11, has been competing against adults since the age of five and recently took on 20 players at the same time at a chess exhibition.

Now, he has been selected to represent his country at the u12 World Chess Championships in Slovenia next month.

As there is no state funding for chess Gorak’s family, who live in James Wicks Court, have clubbed together to raise £4,000 to cover flights, accommodation and expenses to allow him to compete in the eastern European country.

But they are appealing for sponsorship and support to help Gorak achieve his dream of becoming a grandmaster.

Chess should be made an Olympic sport, then there would be funding. Good luck to Gorak.

Boris - what a ridiculous suggestion. What next, hopscotch?
