Thieves strike at elderly couple's home

BURGLARS ransacked a house while its elderly owners were inside.

Thieves used a ladder to scale the property, on Smythies Avenue, Colchester, and smashed an upstairs window.

They stole solid gold sovereign earrings, sovereign bracelets with encased sovereigns, a five-piece gold coin in casing on a gold chain, a two-piece gold coin in casing on a gold chain and a man’s Markeseat watch.

The elderly owners were at home at the time and did not hear anything because they are partially deaf.

Investigating Officer, Dc Hannah Richardson, said: "High-value jewellery has been stolen which is very special to the couple and cannot be replaced due to the age of the jewellery and the fact that some of it was handed down through the family.

“We would ask people to jog their memories back to that Thursday night and recall seeing any suspicious activity on Smythies Avenue.

“If so, then we need to hear from them.”

The break in happened between 9pm and 10pm on Thursday, October 11.

Pawnbrokers have been asked to look out for the items.
